Get positive energy flowing with Feng
Shui
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese tradition of
manipulating energy or 'chi', which can help to improve your
life by directing this subtle energy to inspire and create
positive changes. Chi
is often translated to mean “energy flow” or the energy
that is active in all things.
Today, Feng Shui is
commonly used in western cultures to decorate homes and
arrange furniture. Many people also claim that Feng Shui
can affect personal relationships, physical well-being
and even finances. However, the practice was
traditionally used to choose a place to live, a place to
be buried, or even for crop arrangement and agricultural
planning.
The words “fung shui” are literally
translated to mean “wind-water” and there are numerous
classical techniques, all utilizing differing methods and
practices. Overall, Feng Shui seems to be based on the
Taoist principle that nature is full of energy and very
alive. No matter the technique, consultants and
practitioners all agree that any effort in the use of is
truly worth it.
So how
does it work?
Feng Shui operates
on the basic principle of Yin and Yang: harmony between the
dark and the light. In order to have true harmony,
practitioners of Feng Shui try to organize things around them
in such a way that they can balance the chi.
The most identifiable symbol of
Feng Shui is the Ba-Gua, a grid in the shape of an octagon. The
octagonal represents the eight directions of chi that have to
be balanced in order for you to have good fortune. I-Ching, Yin
and Yang, and the Five Elements are basic principles derived
from Taoism and play a large part in the practice of Feng
Shui.
The purpose of life
is to create a balance in all things and allowing your
consciousness to evolve beyond time and emotion. Feng
Shui believers also incorporate this ancient philosophy
in their home, where furniture is placed in a particular
way to allow good energy to flow through freely and
unencumbered. Each room in a house has its own set of
rules that need to be followed when it comes to the
placement of furniture, decorations and other objects.
However, where you put furniture and ornaments isn't the
only factor that affects Feng Shui. The colours and
materials used for things also impacts the way chi energy
moves around the house, for example, wood furniture can
enhance chi in the south, while ceramic or clay calms it.
Water promotes chi, that’s why you’ll see an aquarium in
many Chinese restaurants and certain types of fish, like
a koi, help promote good luck.
Once you have
placed everything in position according to your own
comfort and convenience, an experienced Feng Shui
consultant will make the necessary modifications to the
floor plan. This ensures that no objects obstruct
external and internal doorways and high traffic areas. In
Feng Shui, such blockages may prevent possible
opportunities to enter your home and
life.
