Reiki
Beat stress
and feel calm, confident and more
positive
Reiki is a Japanese technique used to relieve
stress, provide relaxation and promote healing and benefits
the mind, body and
soul. Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui, a
Tendai Buddist born in 1865 and the word 'reiki' is made of
two Japanese words - Rei which means "god's wisdom or the
higher power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki
is actually "spiritually guided life force
energy."
Reiki is administered by "laying on hands"
and connects and channels an external source of chi that flows
through the practitioner into the person being treated. Eastern
spiritual practices believe that chi doesn't just flow through
us, but it surrounds and engulfs us too. This unseen "life
force energy" is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life
force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or
feel stress and if it is high, we are more capable of
being happy and healthy.
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of
spiritual healing
and self-improvement
that everyone can use. It works in
conjunction with other medical or therapeutic techniques to
relieve side effects and promote
recovery.
What Does a Reiki Treatment Feel
Like?
In a Reiki
healing treatment, practitioners place their hands gently on
different areas of the body. Energy is transferred from the
hands of the practitioner, with the aim of restoring the body's
energy to a state of balance. The patient remains fully clothed
and can be standing, sitting or lying down. Often patients
choose to lie down as they find Reiki deeply relaxing and many
fall asleep or meditate
. You don't have to understand how
Reiki works in order for it to be effective, and as it has
no imposing values it can be used by people of any
background and faith.
The effects
of Reiki healing vary from person to person. Generally,
there are three main sensations people will notice. Firstly,
most people end up in a state of
deep relaxation, drifting in and out of
consciousness, they lose track of time and sometimes an hour
on the treatment table can feel like only 15 minutes.
Secondly, it's very common for people to feel a lot of heat
from the practitioner's hands, sometimes really intense
heat. It seems that the way the body feels the energy is as
heat. The third common experience is to see colours against
the eyelids. Sometimes a random rainbow light show,
sometimes colours that change depending on what
hand-position is being used. It's quite common to see blue,
lilac, violet, purple.
What Can Reiki Do for You?
Reiki helps
you to feel more calm, content and serene. It helps you to feel
more positive, better able
to cope and not so affected by stressful people and
situations. People may come for a treatment with anything
from depression to a pain in their big toe but they all go
away feeling more calm and content, more positive, better
able to cope and less stressed. This effect is also
something that you should start to notice once you've been
attuned to the energy. Not necessarily a great big overnight
transformation, but usually something that builds up in you
gradually, or perhaps it's something that you start to
notice with hindsight. You realise that you are thinking and
feeling about things differently, or maybe your family and
friends start to comment that you seem to be less stressed,
less bothered by things.
Reiki can
invoke a profound relaxation response that lowers blood
pressure, heart rate and pulse. A study looking into how Reiki
can be used to support surgical patients at a US hospital found
that patients who were given Reiki had reduced stress levels
before their operations and the therapy had a calming effect
that helped to decrease the amount of pain relief needed after
the operations.
How
Often do You Need to Have a
Treatment?
Although only
one Reiki session can make a difference, it's usually more
effective to have a course of regular treatments. The frequency
will depend on individual needs and a treatment plan will be
discussed with you subject to your own preferences, and can be
changed at any time according to progress.
Reiki is mainly practised by
private therapists operating from their own homes or specialist
centres. The UK Reiki
Federation
is an independent federation
that lists Reiki healers across Britain and provides
education and training.
Safety
Reiki healing
does not take the place of conventional medicine. Always
consult a GP for an acute or infectious condition or problems
of urgent concern. Reiki is a complementary therapy that works
effectively alongside orthodox healthcare, so expanding
treatment options.
Can Anyone Learn
Reiki?
An amazingly simple technique to learn, the
ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is
transferred to the student during
a Reiki
class. This ability is
passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master and
allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of "life
force energy" to improve one's health and enhance the
quality of life. Over time this connection is improved
through practice and by actually using the Reiki energy on
themselves - typical known as 'self
treatment'.
Dave
Watson Reiki Collection
Dave Watson
has been a Reiki Master for almost 10 years. In that time he
has attuned many people to the level of Reiki-Two and Reiki
Master; given countless Reiki treatments; carried out deep
periods of Reiki Self-Healing and studied the Reiki symbols and
their meaning in an intellectual and intuitive
sense.
Dave has
found Reiki to be clear representation of the spiritual force
which we all have within us, he believes that it is part of our
very essence and once we tap into that with the Reiki
Attunements many new avenues open up to us. One of which is the
ability to heal ourselves, others and any other living
thing.
Many people
who use Reiki find that new avenues and areas of life open up
to them and Dave found a great new phase of creativity opened
up in his life. Since then he has composed and recorded two
Reiki Music CDs, numerous guided meditations, the Reiki Audio
Home Study Courses and also an advanced Course which
concentrates on the use of Reiki as a tool for Personal
empowerment which he calls Usui-Do, as the work is based upon
Maiko Usui’s life’s work.
Reiki opened
up many new aspects of life to Dave and also, through continued
work, gave him a clear view of his own spiritual nature. When
that happens, it is not unusual to want more people to have
that same thing. And Dave believes that if the courses he has
made make it easier for more people to experience and use
Reiki, then he is a happier man!
